Windows XP DVD playback (no more)

Hello,

I?ve been messing around trying to find a utility that would allow me to play European DVDs on either WinDVD or Real Magic Hollywood Plus I have running under XP Pro.
In the process I tried DVD Genie and DVD Region Killer. Neither worked. However, now I can not play any DVDs on my machine :Q . WinDVD kind of starts (e.g. it resized the window to match aspect ratio of the DVD) but then it gives up. Hollywood Plus tells me there is no disc in the drive... Then there is Windows Media Player. It plays the soundtrack of the DVD, but there is no image!

I think I probably accidentally nuked some registry or some other setting? I have tried the System Restore utility, but it only made things worse! I rolled back my computer state to the way it was (supposedly) 2 days ago. But not only did it not enable DVD playback; every time I reboot now, I?m informed that Windows has recovered from a serious error and I?m given the option to submit a crash report...

Any idea what may have gone wrong and where is the magic setting that enables DVD playback?

Is reformatting my HD and starting over the only solution?

Thanks,

Michael
