Windows XP drivers for 7? Old machine. Good idea?

Hi. I recently received a computer I plan to fix by wiping it. Right now I have it loaded and working well with Windows XP. However, I would like to put Windows 7 on if possible (This was a flea market machine with all sorts of junk, incorrect drivers and malware loaded on it when the person received it for cheap; It would be cool to return this to him with a fresh out the box feeling without downgrading). It is an MPC All In One ClientPro 424.

How can I get these to work with Windows 7, or is this even a good idea considering the hardware might not be able to keep up with 7's regular workload? Only thing I can find on this is to try installing through compatibility mode, however it seems I can't find anything on driver specific information for this.

Generally drivers for xp will not work on windows7, but windows 7 should have most of those drivers already built in, and any missing ones could be downloaded from the hw maker, for example the realtek audio

You can try Vista drivers on Win7 but as Dahak said, XP drivers are not likely to work.

Have you tried just installing Windows 7 yet? There's a lot of drivers bundled in it already, especially for older machines. Then if you can get Ethernet working (plug & play USB to Ethernet adapter is handy for this), run Windows Updates and see if there are any other drivers on Microsoft's servers.

I see. I always dread using drivers from windows update. I suppose I'll just have to try it. This machine is capable of running Windows 7 decently? Maybe with aero off.

You can try Vista drivers on Win7 but as Dahak said, XP drivers are not likely to work.

i've tried windows xp drivers with windows 7 and can confirm that they didn't work for me

As others have said, it should work fine, and Windows 7 will most likely come with the drivers already. It is does not, you should have no problem finding some on the website for the part's manufacturer (Realtek, etc).

considering it's age and specs, XP is your best bet for performance.

you could throw a linux distro on it as well.
