Windows XP doesn't recognize SATA drive

I've searched this topic, read the advice, but still am a little stumped.

Windows XP Pro, Intel 845PEBT2: I have only one new drive (WD 120GIB SATA) that I want to load with Windows XP Pro. Bios recognizes the drive, but Windows doesn't during the bootup when I'm trying to install the OS.

I tried putting the Silicon Image SATA drivers on a disk and hit F6 at the right time, but apparently whatever I put on the floppy wasn't what Windows needed to recgonize the new SATA drive.

One piece of advice from another topic thread suggested using the Makedisc.exe; I downloaded the drivers from the Intel site, but after unzipping the file, I couldn't find a makedisc.exe or anything like it.

Can someone help me get past this hurdle?

I had the same problem with my nForce 3 250 board. Despite what many people might say, SATA is not totally Plug'N'Play and universal. You should install the OS to a PATA drive and then load the hard drive controller drivers from your mother board disc when you are in the OS.

Windows XP will likely see it as a SCSI device, but it works just fine.

Then run your computer management tool, its under administartive tools on the start menu. You may have to enable the tools by customizing your taskbar properties.

In Computer Management go to storage then disk management. You will have to format the drive and assign a letter. Then you can RAID and do whatever.

Again I remind you, after having lots of difficulty with SATA hard drives I suggest you NOT boot from them. They and the chipsets will mature over the next few months and it'll be easier then.

I was booting successfully from SATA for the last year. But, then I messed something up and wanted to start over with a new SATA drive. I'll try your workaround.

1sik: I've downloaded that driver and put it on a floppy disk. But, during bootup and trying to load Windows XP (hitting F6 and 'S'), the message said I didn't (apparently) have the correct files on the floppy. Someone in another post said you have to use the "makedisk.exe' to make a floppy file that can be read during this Windows-loading process.

Dunno . . . I'm still confused.

Just download drivers from link. Copy all the files on a floppy. Hit F6 when prompted then s to add controller.
