Windows XP defrag stays at analyzing 5% for extremely long time (SOLVED-couple bad sectors on drive)

So I'm trying to do a disk defragment for my laptop running Windows XP Home.

I first just selected analyze my c drive and it just like sat at the 5% mark for a long long time, like 7 minutes or so. Anyway, it FINALLY went ahead and finished analyzing the drive and said that I didn't need to defrag, but I wanted to anyway, so I went ahead and selected defrag and it did the same hang thing on 5% again.

I'm not running any other programs. I quit every little thing that may have been running on my comp. It just seems to take forever for it to get past that 5% level of analyzing. It's a pain. In the Task Manager it showed low CPU usage and just the normal system idle process doing the majority of the cpu crap.

What could be causing this? I searched the internet but couldn't find anything on this problem.

My guess is that I might have a hard drive that is crapping out, but I really hope that's not the case. Does anyone know what the problem may be?

Thanks in advance for any help that you may be able to provide.

EDIT: I'm think I'm all set... for now at least. Thanks for the help.

Try running it in safe mode, it is probably just another program or process causing the problem. If you think it is the hard drive, I would recommend running the diagnostic from the drive maker.

Defrag will take quite a while to complete if you have not defragged before or not in a long time. I defrag once every 2 weeks or so and it doesnt take long at all doing it more frequently.

Lol. Yeah, I ran scandisk and it found a few bad sectors. Doesn't seem like it's running rampant like the last hard drive that failed on me.

Anyway, good ol scandisk moved the data from the bad areas and everything seems to be running fine now. Defrag no longer hangs and laptop is sailing along. Hopefully that will be the end of hard drive trouble for a while. I would flip out if it died completely.
