Windows XP crashing when I try to delete certain files?

I have a few files on my desktop among other places that I dont need any longer so I try to delete them. When I do, explorer.exe crashes. I've tried a chkdsk, which showed everything as normal so I am not sure what the problem is. I scanned for viruses/spyware just in case and nothing turned up. Any other reasons that may be causing this?

What happens if you delete them from a command prompt? I'm guessing a bad shell extension that is doing something with the file type (rendering a thumbnail, getting extra file info, something that would account for why these files are different from the others...)

deleting it from the command prompt worked fine. On my desktop, when i select the file and hit delete, it crashes before I even can click OK or CANCEL when the delete prompt usually should come up. What would you suggest?

do you have dr divx installed? try uninstalling if you do.. also. try going to trash can and removing the "ask for confirmation when deleting". that way it wont show the yes no delete thing.

fyi, it seems like they are all movie files.....avi files it seems

Are these files fairly large in their sizes? Could it be Recycle Bin settings?

they're all over 10mb, but they range anywhere form 10mb to 1gb. I do hvae dr divx installed...I will uninstall that and give it a try. Thanks 🙂
