windows xp corrupt event viewer system file

Under the events viewer there are three catagories, one of which is system. When I went to empty this log, windows told me that the that the system error log itself was corrupt, and now there is a red X over it. What is the best way to go about repairing this?

That will erase the actual file that that is corupt, however the folder itself is corupt. Never seen this before.

If the directory is corrupt you need to run chkdsk on the drive.
