windows XP checks the hard drive

A couple of times in the last week or two Windows XP has checked the hard drive for consistency when loading up. The check itself doesn't report anything. Does this mean there is something wrong with the hard drive?

It usually means Windows did not shut down properly so didn't get to write an "I shut down correctly yay!" message to the HD.

Are you doing something silly like turning off a power strip to shut down your PC instead of going to the Start menu? Or are you running without a UPS and having power dropouts?
