Windows XP build numbers - Answer the question, or just drop in to say hi!!

Ok, I didn't see any threads pertaining to this topic, so I figured I would ask..

Does anyone know if there are different release builds of Windows XP, I know there is build 2600 but I was curious as to if this was the final build that you would have if you installed from a retail cd, or if there were other ones you may have.

Also, were there any beta releases of XP that were build 2600 or did 2600 mark the release of XP?

Hi, DeRusto,

I just installed SP1 into XP Pro and this is my version number now.

Version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp1.020828-1920

Why do you want to know the version numbers? Are you checking to see if you have the latest version number?

Hi guy, howz it hangin!

I'm currently running XP Corp/slipsteamed sp1 on this box and it says "Build 2600.xpsp1.020828-1920 : Service Pack 1"

My laptop has Retail XP, no sp1 on it and it's build is "Build 2600.xpclnt_qfe.010827-1803"

Windows XP = build 2600.

NT4 release was build 1381.
W2K release was build 2195.
XP release was build 2600.

Yes, folks, this is the evolution of a long development process. And yes, that's really how it works.

FWIW, .NET server release candidate 1 is build 3663.

And they're still counting. In general, the build lab increments the build number each day with the daily build.

Thanks for the answers guys..I see the invitation to drop in and say hi brought a bunch of people🙂

Well, yes, I did want to check on my version number because when I installed sp1, it was a couple days before the 'official' release..wanted to make sure it was actually the latest..

Also, my friend is having problems with installing it, it doesnt say he can't, it just quits out abruptly...

DeRusto,

That can happen if you have a illegal ID used to install a copy of XP. It can quit with no explanations. There was a list of illegal ID numbers that SP1 won't install on.

I have legal copies so that was not a problem for me.

Hi, bacillus!!

johnlog -
He actually is using a copy with a liscence from his dad's company..I would think it is not an 'illegal' key, even if it isn't one he should be using😉

If you have an illegal key, you'll get an error message.

Have your friend disable antivirus and try again.

Genius!! I've got a good feeling that is the problem, as he runs the full Norton suite🙂

Disabling your antivirus programs is not good enough. When installing XP or XP Pro you should first UNINSTALL your antivirus program then install XP. After XP has installed correctly then reinstall your antivirus programs. That is for both Norton antivirus 2002 and McAfee antivirus 6x. If you do not install your antivirus program AFTER you install XP your antivirus program will not function correctly.

Defref,

Huh? Care to explain? <<<

According to the instructions I had it said to first uninstall either McAfee antivirus 6 or Norton antivirus 2002 before installing XP. Then after you install XP successfully is to install either one, depending which one you use, then install the program. That is because when installing those two antivirus programs in XP they install some different files designed especially for XP.

What I know about it so I followed those instructions and have a perfect XP Pro installation. I also followed other instructions XP found out about my computer setup. What more can I say? I follow instructions.

I do not make dozens of complaints about XP as some others do on Anandtech. Wonder why? 🙂
