windows XP boot issue

Ok basically i have 3 hhd, one has just died.

when i installed windows, i put windows onto the sata drive which is drive E:
the 2 other drivers are c and d.

d has just died, if i take this out i can no longer boot, because E: defaults to D 🙁
and it nolonger can find the boot record.

repair console is no good and i think changing the boot letter would just cause more problems as loads of software are configured for E:

is windows not suppose to retain the drive letter if its the drive with the installion of windows on it? one thing i did notice was that the drive appears to be hot pluggable? (maybe means windows things its removable and the letter defaults to the avliable letter?

is there not a way to get this sata drive to default to e: ?

any help would be great.
