Windows XP Bad Install

My step dad tried installing XP on his computer but didn't take off 98. While XP was installing (on a different partition) it had some error about his video card (it's on an 266 Mhz IBM laptop but I forgot what the error said exactly).

The problem is, everytime he boots up, it automatically tries to continue installing XP. Is there a way he can force it to boot up in 98 or better yet, fix the error? I know it's vague but the error has something to do with not recognizing his video card or that it's not part of the original hardware setup or something...

Any help / ideas is more than welcome, thanks!

ew... just format and do a clean install..

i did an on-top-of install before too and it was fugly... everything was absolutely, horrendously slow... I even wonder why they offer such 'upgrade'

back up your stuff & clean ass install.. you'd love it.. that crisp feeling..

Probably get better responses in Operating Systems Forums, but my quick answer:

When you see "Starting Windows..." in the txt/dos part of bootup, hit F5, or F8, one of the two. It'll bring up a screen, and usually "Setup Windows XP" will be there, as well as your old OS.

And I know that XP on a 266 is bad, but once you turn off all the graphic features, it's not that bad. The problem is that he has NONE of the drivers so if he puts 98 on it, it's pretty much useless....

Sweet deal, thanks Crimzon!

I hope that works

1. Go into the bios. Change boot order to "Boot fromCD"
2. Boot from CD
3. Format the HD in NTFS

BTW, XP is gonna suck ass on a 266MHz processor. You can try it thoguh.

I'm 550 miles away and I tried to talk him through the "boot from cd" option in bios but we couldn't find it.

I will be down there next week though so I should be able to find it...thanks!

My advice: tell him to buy a new laptop.

He lost his job a year ago and since has returned to school to get a nursing degree. He can't really afford a new laptop and doesn't need one since he only types and goes onlien with it.
