Windows XP and Windows 98 Network

Tonight I hooked up the Linksys Wireless router to a Dell PC running Win XP home and a Sony VAIO running Windows 98. I got the two computers to share the internet connection just fine. I also got the Dell XP machine to see the VAIO notebook and the files it was sharing.
But for the life of me I could not get the VAIO notebook running 98 to see the Dell running XP. I know this network is possible, any tips from people who have gotten it working?
I tried using the Windows XP cd on the 98 machine to install the network drivers it needed to be compatible, but that helped none. Each machine was using all of the same protocols, that didn't help. Any suggestions? Thanks!

is either the sony or the dell connected wirelessly?? or are they both hardwired over cat5 through the router?

The Dell Desktop is cat 5 into the router. The Sony VAIO is wireless into the router.

The Dell is running XP, the VAIO is running 98.

Disable all software Firewall.

Enable Guest accounts on the XP.

i have a similar setup...because the VAIO is on the wireless part of the network, it most likely will not allow the Dell to show up in network neighborhood.

the solution for me was simply to map the DELL's IP in my LMHOSTS file.

search your HDD for "lmhosts.sam"

rename it to lmosts (get rid of the .sam)

figure out what IP your Dell is being assigned (ipconfig /all at a command prompt)

in lmosts (open in notepad), add the IP followed by spaces followed by computer name (it may be the other way around, i don't remember...follow the examples given in the lmhosts file)

save and reboot, and then go to start...run..and type in \\dellcomputername

you'll have full access to shares assuming sharing is setup as JackMDS suggested.

this is the only way i know of to get sharing through a wireless router...it's not really that difficult...and it's good to know how to map IP's
