Windows XP and WD2500 install prob

I tried doing a full install of Win XP home on a 250GB WD HDD. I tried to partition it into 3 drives of approx 100 GB each. I've tried installing windows on a partition that is 130GB and below. I used the NTFS file system.
It copies files for installation and goes past dynamic update. However, it gives an error when installing windows and its before I type in the product code.
The error is a fatal error saying something like a file has been externally altered and i can't do anything else. Its in a dialogue box. The it gives the file as some I386\asms or something like that.
Any help?

depending on your controller drivers your loading during setup, you may need to make the C: partition 128GB or less.

Doesn't something in SP1 fix XP's handling of drives larger than 137GB? You may need to slipstream SP1 into an install CD and use that for the install.

Search for slipstream.

Make only one partition for starters to the the OS up. After you apply the service pack, you should be able to do most anything you want.
