I just wondered if there is a version of Windows that will let me, the person who bought my computer, use the keyboard the way I want to ?

ie, I might want to hold a key down for a little while or a long time, as an example, without my operating system deciding it means something I didn't know I was telling it.

Turning every concievalbe thing off there doesn't completely remove some of these "features" that I want no part of.

Did you uncheck "use shortcut" under settings for each item?

Of course, I said I turned off every conceivable thing.

I read the manual, help and support, microsoft support, and searched the internet for clues.

I'm pretty sure there is no way to completely shut these features off.

They are lurking there on the computer, waiting to pounce.

Kind of like the way IE sometimes decides to go to Windows update on it's own, usually when I'm in a hurry to look up a phone number or something, and instead I'm checking my computer for updates.

Or take the network icon in the tray, the icon itself is cool, lets me know I've established a connection..so why do I need a balloon popping up telling me that I've established a connection ? That's what the icon does.

It's time to take up the righteous path and follow where Andy helped Linus get to. It is time for Tominux. ;)

I think if you are in a rush to get phone numbers you need to invest in a blackberry. Much better than having to deal with a computer for contacts, and *simple* email usage methinks.

Other than that, perhaps windows just isn't the OS for you. :)

Yes there are ways to turn these features off, furthermore IE can be configured not to go to Windows update on it's own either. Seriously dude, learn how to use your OS. Not sure about the connection bubble. Haven't used dialup since the 33.6kbps days.
