my brother just got a new HP computer preloaded with WinXP. is there anything he needs to do to configure his @home cable connection in order to use it? he has a 3Com USB Cable Modem.

any help would be great.

oh yeah, he lives in the chicago area.

Well, he needs to change the new computer's name to the same one his old computer had. Then he has to duplicate all the IP settings. Finally, if he's using a new NIC card, he needs to call @home and have them recognize it.

Better yet, if this is all Greek to him, just have him call @home's 888 number and let them talk him through it, and push the new NIC while they're at it.

Have them talk him through setting up his E-mail program too, or it wont work either. The setting and addresses are different for each city.

I changed NIC,OS and everything. And alll I did was put in the comps name and workgroup. After that I started up my browser and was on my way.

I didnt need to touch IP settings or anything at all.Comp NAME and WORKGROUP.......thats it.

I have changed NIC's several times and never had to call @home. When I changed to XP I also changed The NIC to a better one. I just put in the right name and workgroup and off I went. I don't think they can tell what NIC I have as it is behind a router. I have three computers using one IP with the router.

The NIC doesnt matter, the only setting that should matter is having the computer name set correctly, and the IP address set to automatic and everything should work fine. Workgroup doesnt matter either.

Workgroup doesn't matter? If I change mine from @home I can't connect, I think @home has a lot of different hardware configurations out there.

may be AmusedOne has to do that with his gateway to @home, mine is Comcast, and I don't have to call them when I install a new NIC card, but I do have to call them if I get a new cable modem. anytime I install a new OS I have to change my computer name (to what comcast gave me) and my workgroup to @HOME.. and then run the 'connect to internet'.. and tell windows you have a lan connection, and to use the lan connection.. and so on.. and when you done with that, you should be able to start IE and you should be connected. oh, you will have to restart the computer when you change the computer name and workgrou name.

Probably the only time you need to call them is if you change cable modems.
What exacty should be checked to set the IP to automatic? Just want to make sure mine is set right. The last time I called, they gave me this info, but I've reinstalled the OS since then, overwriting it all. I remember I was suprised at the small amount of what I had to check/set. Unlike when I first got cable a few years ago and they gave me all kinds of crap to put in Network settings.
