windows XP and Dell Inspirion install problem

Checked compatibility and everything seemed ok, then tried the install. Gets 3/4 through the "installing devices" sequence, then the screen goes dark and the hard drive stops. Acts like it is going in sleep mode, but the laptop is useless as I can't back out of the install now. Any ideas?
