Windows XP and CD roms?

I have noticed overall poor CD rom performance in windows XP. I have 2 CD rom drives, a Sony 52x and a Plexwriter 16x10x40a. Neither of them will install Ultima online or Quake3. The media is fargen perfect. I have herd of CD rom performance tweaks for windows 98. are there any for XP? (btw i can burn CD's flawlessly)
