HI
When I try to use the Add-Remove Windows Components feature on WinXP. It fails.
I get the following message.
WINDOWS IS UNABLE TO OPEN INFORMATION FILE ROOTAU.INF.
CONTACT YOUR SYSTEM ADMINSTRATOR. THE SPECIFIC ERROR CODE IS 0XE0000100 AT LINE 0.
I've checked the Microsoft Knowledge Base and there was nothing there.
I've reinstalled the o/s several times. On each reinstall, I did a low level format.
I am using a Maxtor 80 gig hard drive with ntfs partions.

This problem has been driving me nuts for a week!!!
Yes,,, I NEED HELP!!!!!!

Thanks

You said you reinstalled the program numerous times, did you do a clean install or did you load your previous program and then upgrade? If you reloaded the OS then it should be perfect including having the ability to do what you want to do.

If you haven't done a clean install and want to check out this site:

Clean Install

Hope this helps some.

HI
Here is more info on what I did.
2 weeks ago, I bought 2 Maxtor hard drives. Then, bought a copy on the WinXP o/s oem version.
I was able to install the o/s on the new drive. I used the Maxblast software to partition and format the drive. I set the drive up as a fat32 single partition. Then, loaded the o/s.
It loaded ok. There was one problem. I got a "Application has failed to start because Framedyn.dll was not found" message. I was able to correct that. Then, I installed the second drive. Partitioned and formatted that as a fat32. I then used the second drive to store a few files.
2 days later, the hard drive failed. Called Maxtor and a new on is on the way.
I then took the second drive and deleted the files on it. Then, using Norton Wipe Info, I had the Wipe Info write all "0's" in the free space on the drive.
After that, I used the Maxblast to repartion the drive, this time to ntfs.
I loaded the Win XP o/s on the drive and it went ok. I got the same error message as I did on the first drive and corrected it. I then installed the keybord software and drivers as I am using the Microsoft Internet Keyboard. When I pushed the calculator button on the keyboard, nothing happens. The other buttons seem to work.
I then went to the add/remove Windows Components. When I click on the Add/remove, I got the following message. "WINDOWS IS UNABLE TO OPEN INFORMATION FILE ROOTAU.INF.
CONTACT YOUR SYSTEM ADMINSTRATOR. THE SPECIFIC ERROR CODE IS 0XE0000100 AT LINE 0."
I then put the WinXP cd in and tried to use the "Install Opitional Windows Components."
I got the same error message of not being able to open the information file.
I have repartioned and formated the hard drive about 3 more times using the Maxblast software and then reinstalled the o's. I still get the same errors.
Also, other Windows Somponents such as the task bar speaker can't be installed.
Other then doing another repartition and doind a slow Windows format on a 80 gig drive, I don't know what else to do. I've searched several sites for a fix and so far, no luck.
Looks like I need HELP!!!!
Thanks Pghpooh

Have you performed a format and partition without the MaxBlast Software, and simply use the WinXP Setup to do the job?

HI
AndyHui,, I was thinking of letting letting WinXP do the format and partition during setup. I backed off doing that as my thoughts were that formatting a 80gig drive would take hours.
Considering the time I have put in on it,, I might just do that.
Any idea how long it would take to format the 80gig drive using the WinXP partition and format features?
Thanks

HI
I finally decided to go back to square one. With the reply from AndyHui I decided to use the WinXP to partition and format the hard drive. And,,, after loading the WinXP software, at this point in time,, the features I have used ARE WORKING!!!!

THANKS AndyHui for the suggestion!!
