Windows XP Activation

I built a new PC a month ago, but didn't have a new version of Windows XP handy. I used the serial number and CD that I used with my old computer. Now the 30 days to activate are up and I am locked out of my computer (I can run it in safe mode, but no internet). That's not really the problem since I can buy a new $5-15 (not sure, but it's cheap) licensed copy of XP from the university that my parents work at.
My question is, when I activate Windows over the phone, can I just give them the new serial number? or do I have to enter the number into my computer or reinstall windows with the new number?

If the copy of Windows XP is only installed on one PC, the old license is still perfectly valid. Call the number on the activation screen, tell the rep that you've reinstalled Windows and its only on one machine, and they'll give you the activation code.

If you go and buy a new Windows XP license and serial, though, I think you'll probably have to reinstall Windows. You might try asking a rep about that too.

Buy the new license for $5 - $15. Go to Activate Windows. Choose activate by telephone. There is an option that will allow you to change your key. Change the key to correspond with what you just bought. At this point you can continue with the telephone activation, or you can cancel and activate over the internet.

What happens if I buy MCE 2005 from Newegg, and go to use it on the screen that says to 'change product ID' but I cannot proceed past that screen? It's acting like I made a typo. I doubt Newegg did anything wrong. if I do a repair, can I use this CD perhaps and then will I be prompted for the product key?

if the old key is an oem, they will want to know if you still have the hardware you bought it with, just say yes it was an ide or sata cable.
