My roommate installed windows xp professional on 2 computers, but after he installed it on second computer it says that he exceeded the maximum number of installations. I thought the Professional addition allows multiple installations of windows xp...??

Yet another person shafted by M$.

Mr. Gates, how is a computer-inclinded person like myself able to provide tech support to his divorced parents if he has to buy a copy of XP for each parent? It would be far easier if I bought one copy of XP and installed it on my parent's computers.

Um it does do multiple. You can install it a few times I believe, but I dont know the exact number. I thought it was 10? Have you given out the number to anyone else? The corporate doesnt requirwe any activation.

No, it only support 1 for the average retail package. There is volume licensing available, but that's a special purchase and much more expensive.

So what's the difference between Pro and Home Edition?

home sucks.

pro rocks.

(really it's network support and some administration functions).

If you're that worried about it, just call the activation center and make up some lame excuse; they'll give you a code so you can activate it.

Yeah the activation center is pretty cool about that. I got it from school, and the key had already been used. So we called my friend called up MS and told them, and they just gave us a new key.

I have a Pro copy.. first time I installed, never asked for activation stuff.. second time [after format], it asked and I did it.. third time, it asked again and I submitted and there wasn't any problem.

If you install it on the same PC you shouldn't have to activate it, it should tie with your h/w and it will let you activate it over and over. if I remember correctly...

Yep, I have to get on the horn and call every other month it seems, fvckin irritating.

Sigh....XP has been out forever. There are many ways to get around these problems. Google is your friend.

Is there a legal way that is ok with microsoft to do it? I bought a legit copy for a reason you know.

I was under the impressioin that MS would let you legally install Windows on a desktop and a laptop at the same time. Theory being that you would only be using one of them at a time.
