Well, seems like you need to call microsoft if you are installing windows with the same key for the second time and on.
Today I've spent half an hour on the phone because I kept getting disconnected

How do I go around it? I've heard there's a software that can let you keep your previous activation data and transfer it to the new pc.

Anyone?

This is my 6th time reinstalling windows since I purchased it,a 1.5 years ago. It let me do it 2 twice with no problem, but I had to call ever since.

After this, I had to validate it to get the updates. It was giving me errors for an hour untill I just found some of my backups with old security updates. After those were installed,IE6 let me through and validated my windows.
IDIOTS!!!

I don't understand why anyone needs to reinstall Windows so many times. Maybe you better see if you can talk to a person. The on-line screening probably has you blacklisted by now. 6 times in 18 months is really excessive. That's a reinstall every 3 months. Wierdness is rampant! :)

At one time I did 3 in 6 months...And I'm not weird...

"Repurposing" of the machine is one reason a person might reinstall (work --> home, or old owner --> new owner, etc), and getting rid of heinous malware infections is another, so keep an open mind about the "why" part. Some people could need to reinstall several times a year just from malware.

That said, this isn't a good place to ask about circumventing product activation, and I believe the method you heard about doesn't work since SP1 onwards anyway. Why don't you just call for activation like corkyg suggested. It won't take very long.

Hey nweaver......guess what..I consider a 3-4 year XP install as weird.
But then I do more than just log onto AT all day long...

Yeah I get sick of the reinstall too much attitude around here. If you want you want to reformat and reinstall every week then that?s your business. Since MS changed the activation policy on OEM's then you?re going to have to get use to calling in the activation or get some imaging software and make an install backup.

I had the same problem with the whole "Call MS to activate your Windows" after you've used your key twice or more. This really blows. Go here and download all your updates.:

Autopatcher is a program that's updated every month with ALL the updates from Microsoft. This means you never have to validate Windows again!

Well, if I can't boot into Windows I sometimes have to wipe the drive and start over.

and how do you figure you never have to validate windows? you know that if you don't activate windows it was lock you out after 30 days right?

I switch between Windows and Linux frequently.

I've installed this copy at least five times and I've never had to call.

I do more too, I just don't use pirated/fishy software, and stay away from the midget goat pr0n sites that exploit IE holes all day long.

My install is over 18 months old; it's rock stable, smooth as butter and I do high end-gaming (Oblivion, HL2-Ep1, F.E.A.R, WoW) on it, as well as intensive audio editing and recording. Re-install is something I don't see in my near future.
