They'd have to recompile the OS for the new architecture, so you'll be paying for that portion of the process at least.

In the microsoft world, nothing is really free.

Yes, they did charge for Win98 SE, and that was the comparison I was thinking about when I replied. There is virtually no chance at all that Microsoft will just hand the 64-bit version of Windows XP out to owners of Windows XP.
