cool!!!

OK and then give us a rundown on how fast the applications run!!! Go right down the line and start running encoding, 3d rendering, distributed computing, etc....Would you??? I am tired of hearing 64bit is going to give 20%+ increase...i want to see it....

My challenge to all AMD64 users....Show us all how fast 64bits for desktop uses will be....

I think a week should be enough time right??? Because it sounds like this thing is still a year away from release to the average public who do not want to be beta testers....

If it's still a year away from release to the average public, doesn't that mean there's room for substantial improvement? So these numbers may not be that accurate at all.

yes, but id say its blatantly obvious that MS wants our feedback in order to speed up the time frame.
i mean thats all we are good for anyways right? ;) (beta testers)

im sure this will be very intersting :D

yep....BUt you have to start somewhere.....Don't always promise me around the corner. According to some of the mouths around here the 64bits should be crushing so lets say lets start delievering at least some of that crushing lead....

I think the biggest thing may be the fact that ATI has not released 64bit vid card drivers.....As well as 64bit driver support for other hardware.....

However if this is a real year away from final oS support and then it will take sometime for program support and the rest of the drivers to be implemented then I don't see how thw AMD crowd around here can blast INtel and Intel users who say the need isn't here yet...Cause if you don't have an OS for the masses to run it and programs to take advantage of it then the A64's 64 bit isn't necessary yet and INtel could waltz in when the OS is ready and put out a 64bit chip and nothing was lost....

Its NOT !!!!! A Beta the beta testing stage is over this is a consumer impression release and also its a smart move by Microsoft in speeding up the validation process by getting the public to do it for them and also for the puplic to find any new bugs! That they may have overlooked in there beta testing.

So put it simply this is the full version final release ? and just like windows XP when it first came out in 2001 it wasn?t fully free of bugs until service pack 1 came out

I guess this way microsoft can put in a service pack in the retail version for a bug free first off release of there software !! .. and its about time I say !
;) Cheers Microsoft

I have burned it but not tried it yet, a couple things are keeping me from installing. On the CD documentation it says minimum 512 MB ram. On technet it says minimum 1 GB ram. I am still not sure about program compatability.

Has anybody tried it yet? Does it come with a full standard setup of drivers, Lan, video, sound, etc....?????

This thing **should** have all of the drivers. There are only two platforms out there for athlon 64? Nvidia and Via. Microsoft should have been able to include this limited number of drivers on the cd. We will see. The drivers are available from Via and Nvidia however.

Bug #1: I get an error when I try to proceed with the download (a valiant effort considering I'm on a 49.2k connection, eh? ;)). Anyone else getting this?

Commerce.MtsPipeline error '80004005'

Component Execution failed for component[0x2] hr: 0x80004005 ProgID: Commerce.RequiredOrderInitCy.1 Dictionary error: Value for key 'quantity' in dictionary 'Items(1)' is of the wrong type (expected a variant of type 3, got 8) (orderform=default)

anyone else getting hung up at the "installing devices" section of the install? The bar hasn't moved in about 10 minutes, but the flickering lights are still going across, and the background keeps changing. I don't hear any disks, or hard drive spinning though.

I'm running it and it did have all the drivers I needed except audio and those don't appear to be anywhere so no audio for me with this OS@this time. It won't run AquaMark3 and the PCMock '02 and UT2K3 Demo bench scores were similar to the 32bit XP Pro, but 3DMock2k1se was 600points low but could be the 64bit Detonator betas fault. This is an older beta from what I can tell and it's definitely not playing nice with some software, and it doesn't have a zip utility in it, though it does include DX9.0b. POVRAY ran the same and my older CPU-Z didn't fully function so I DL'd the newest version and it's fine. I'll say this much for it so far, if it was any snappier I'd get whiplash, but it's got more bugs than Mr. Pratt from Creep Show :p I just wish I had a UT2k3 64bit bench to compare with the 32bit :(

Nope, but mine took a long time copying the last 5% of files needed for install as if it had to keep re-reading the disk for the data, as if the disk were dirty or damaged and it most assuredly is neither.

Ok. this may sound weird. I turned my computer off (hard shutdown via power button), and tried to reinstall it, and it rebooted in the middle. I then went and set my overclock back to default (2000mhz), and it went smoothly. Now I'm tired, so I'm going to sleep. Will have to mess around with it tomorrow.

So far it's doing precisely dick with any of the 32bit apps brudda, no real negative effect but certainly nothing remotely on the order of a 20% performance increase. Whoever said that was wearing their fanboi goggles :p This does appear to be a less than mature beta, but I suspect/hope that MS will have a another service pack for it in short order since they released it to the general public now. It also desperately needs 64bit version software to run on it I'm thinking too.

Yup. There will be a long wait before that is going to be released in a fashion that you would see notable increases. Given my recent experience with Mandrake Linux don't put much hope to it. Perhaps in 2005.
