I have had the same trouble. It just SITS there, at times I have to press my power button. It has started this ever since I installed .NET framework for a video editing program

had this problem on win98 machine I had. Explorer wouldn't let go of the machine. Turns out I had a bad install disk and it didn't copy some files. You're running XP so I'm sure this isn't the case. Do you have always-on internet? Sometimes a stray program doesn't like to be cut off from the net, so check for spyware.

I created this problem after "tweaking" using the XPTC tweak guide. Did a system restore and it corrected it. Gonna tweak a little slower next time.

Try turning off your firewall/virus protection before doing an update.

I have met this problem on my two w2k machines after installed one game patch, even uninstall the patch and edited registry, all the way I can find in google, still not working, afte half to one year's pain, I reinstalled the w2k without take over old stuff, now machine is shut down properly.

To me, the best way is to reinstall the system, make the system clean and little faster
