Windows won't set the right IP for my NIC!! How can I fix this?

I am trying to connect another computer to my router (netgear rt314). All I had to do for my previous ones was to set the NIC to obtain IP automatically, and it would obtain the IPs 192.168.0.x, working perfectly fine.

But this computer, sets some weird IP like 169.254.202.98. subnet mask 255.255.0.0

RT314 is configured to work with NIC setting "obtain IP automatically", and just in case, I tried to set the IP as 192.168.0.5, but no luck.

I also tried using a different ethernet adapter which I know works (took out from working computer), and still has weird IP...

Anyone have ideas why this may be happening?

Check your cabling. You got that 169 address because your PC couldn't contact a DHCP server (in this case, the Netgear). Also, the fact that you hard-coded a valid address and it still didn't work indicates a problem with your cable, your NIC, or maybe the driver.

IF that router also has Ethernet ports, and if it has an "UPLINK" port, first make sure that you are not plugged into the uplink port AND if something else is plugged into the uplink port, the port next to it is probably shared and will not work. Try moving the jumper to another port....

FWIW

Ah man, you are right. I hooked it up to another cable and it worked. That means the cable that we made (first time), is somehow bad. I'll look into that. Thank you.

Is there a place I can find the proper way to prepare a cat5 cable?

Good fix! Yeah Win2k does that when it can't find a real IP. It does that autoconfig for it's IP. Pain in the butt sometimes.
