Windows wont respond at all, need to back stuff up in Linux

I used the windows cd to update windows and install over my old version due to a couple problems I was having. Long story short, Windows is dead but my files are still there. I have knoppix running off the cd, but I'm not sure how to set it to write to the hard drive and allow me to backup some stuff before I format. Suggestions?

I would recommend you copy from your dead windows partition to a usb thumb drive if you have one. It is safer.

If you want to write the files from windows to your hardrive, you need to have an ext3 partition on the hard-drive. Knoppix should have already mounted your windows partition. Just copy (drag-n-drop) files from the ntfs windows partition to the ext3 partition or thumbdrive if you have one. You could also use K3B to burn the files to CD if you have a 2nd CD-Rom drive burner.

looks like u r in big trouble..........anyway first thing u have to do is mount ur windows partitions....i hope they r fat32...bcouz some versions of tux still don't support ntfs........next u need another partiion or drive to dump those files!!...........thats it ........now if u need help fr mount command then.i think command is some thin like
mount /mnt/hda1 /mnt/dos_drive1
where hda1 is ur windows partition

This is running in NTFS. Can I make an ext3 parition without deleting anything? Ive been able to copy stuff onto the ram drive, but considering the amount of ram I have, and the size of the files I have to back up, it doesnt add up. I do have 20gb free, which is enough for the bulk of things I need to backup.

Have you tried the "Repair Windows" option? I did that before because I couldn't bootup with my old computer and it started working again. What exactly is the problem? What error messages are you seeing?

Ill try using the repair function later, but if possible I want to try to get this knoppix solution working.

I installed a 2nd cd drive, so one can run knoppix and the other burn stuff. When I'm using K3b, I cant even look at stuff on my hard drive. When clicking on the hda icon puts the settings for the hard drive on the cd to be burned, it doesnt let me view anything in hda. Ive also tried entering the location for HDA (file:/mnt/hda1) and it says that this drive can't be read or isnt there, but I can access media files when I access HDA through the desktop icon. SUggestions?

Are there any other linux distros that run off a live cd like knoppix that are more NTFS friendy? I know Slax is another live cd, but I'm not sure if it would be any better to use.
