Windows won't detect new hard drive.

I got my laptop back today from my warranty company w/o an OS installed. Windows XP installation tells me that it is unable to detect a hard drive. When trying to boot up it tells me that NTLDR is missing(NT LOADER). Ubuntu, however, has no trouble installing whatsoever. Sadly I require certain Windows exclusive programs in my life, so I was wondering whether anyone could help me install XP? Thanks in advance.

NTLDR is the Windows bootloader. The Linux equivalent would be GRUB. What usually causes that error message is a corrupt boot loader. Just install Ubuntu (which will overwrite the corrupt bootloader with grub in the process). Then you'll be able to wipe the drive using the Windows XP install cd and install Windows. (and of course put Ubuntu on after 😉)

I've tried that already, Grub loads just fine. Windows still can't find a drive. Also, the drive is a complete blank, or so they tell me.

Go Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management.

You should see it in the list there.

Right-click on the white space bar thing and choose create partition. Then format it and it should show up as a drive letter.

I'd have to install XP first, which I can't do. Gateway has a sata driver that is needed for all non-gateway supplied OSs, which is what I'm trying to do. It's however, an .exe!!!! Now how can I run it during boot up?

Edit: Ah I think it'll extract a useable driver. Just gotta find another pc with windows now.

Sorry, Adn4n - I didn't read the problem well enough.

It sounds like you found a fix for it though - I hope it worked out for you.
