I built my computer about 1.5 years ago and the fan on my video card died so I sent it in to MSI and got a new one back today. I put it back into my computer and tried to boot up but I get this:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

along with some other stuff

but it lets me use

? Safe Mode
? Safe Mode with Networking
? Safe Mode with Command Prompt
? Last Known Good Configuration
? Start Windows Normally

I've tried all of these things but the computer just tried then restarts and goes back to this screen. what do I do?

Is the motherboard the same model as the last one? If not, Windows can give a number of different responses.

I've moved a hard drive from one board to another where both had VIA chipsets. It worked, but Windows recognized the changes and required re-activation. At that point, I quit working on that system because it was flakey in other ways, but if I had wanted to continue, I would have re-installed Windows.

If it is entirely different, including a different chipset maker (for example nVidia, rather than VIA) there may be too many differences in the way it's set up to run in anything but Safe Mode.

You may have to re-install Windows for your current board. If so, I suggest using a different hard drive so you can transfer your files once it's set up. If you can boot to your old drive in Safe Mode, you should be able to export your bookmarks, e-mail, etc. so you can import them to your new setup.

ok more problems

someone told me to repair my windows and I chose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R" then I read from this website http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#Warning1 not to do that. so I just went in then typed exit in the console and did nothing. now I try to follow the steps they give but when they say to press R to repair I don't get any option to do so. have I ****** myself?

Sounds like your hard drive could be a problem. Try mounting it as a slave on another system to see if you can read your files, and back them up.

Run your drive maker's diagnostics. If it passes, you may have to re-install Windows, anyhow. If it fails, I hope you can save your files.

Good luck. :)

I really don't think it could be the hard drive though... nothing changed in the hard drive the whole computer was fine then the fan on the video card broke ALL I did was take the video card out of the computer ship it off and get the exact same model back from them. I got it back today, put it in the computer and this happened.

I don't have any other systems to do that with and I don't have the diagnostics since I got it refurbished
