This one's a little weird and I don't know exactly where to put it but here it goes........

Windows XP won't boot all the way if my printer is plugged into the usb port. If it's unplugged, XP boots fine. If it's plugged in AFTER it boots, it's fine and works fine. But if it's plugged in at the time of bootup, it no likey.

What's REALLY funny is that the printer's 2 months old and for the first 2 months it was fine. It's only started doing this in the last week or so.

I even uninstalled/reinstalled everything.....INCLUDING Win XP.

I have no idea WHY this thing is doing this but it's pissin me off!!!

???

You may want to try a new USB cable if you reinstalled everything (..including the printer drivers).

See if that helps....

Well, I wanted to write off a cable anyway, but I know better. When you swear up/down & sideways that there's no way it could be the cable, it turns out to be the cable.

But in this case, it isn't the cable.

Tried another one (new in package) but no joy.

Any other suggestions?

If you haven't tried using different USB ports, which I imagine you have, you can check the BIOS to see if it's trying to boot from USB.

If so, change ir to boot from your hard disk, save, and exit and see if that helps. In the meantime, what are your specs?

Will do. I'll check BIOS. I *did* have to change boot sequence when I was trying to fix this originally and ended up just reinstalling windows anyway, but the problem was around before I adjusted boot sequence.

IBM ThinkCentre
P4 2.8Ghz
2gb ram
etc. etc.

What happens if the printer is plugged in but turned OFF? Why turn a printer on unless you are going to print?

Actually, it's my work setup. At home I definitely don't turn the sucker on unless I'm using it but in this case, I use it almost hourly.

And because it's an MFP, I'm often scanning, copying, etc. with it.

What I can't get over is why it started doing this for no apparent reason.

And I'll have to test the power off thing but I'd guess it'll start.

I think if I disable USB boot entirely, my mouse might tank things.

The printer is an HP - 'nuff said.

Does it happen to make a difference when the computer boots if the printer is in sleep mode or not? Also, are you using the driver that came with the printer, or are you downloading the most recent version? It might be worth trying the one on the CD that came with the printer in case HP has "improved" the driver.

The way you describe it also kind of makes me wonder if you could have a power issue. It might be worth trying to plug the printer in via a powered USB hub to see if it makes a difference.
