Windows Volume XP Professional

Text

Can someone explain to me what is the difference? How many installs can I do. This guy is selling one on cragislist and it is sealed. I talked to him and he legit.

Since this deal would constitute de facto piracy (on several fronts, actually), this thread is being locked. AnandTech Forums is not the place to ask what you can get away with, in regards to licensing fraud or piracy.

Looks like one of those "XP Pro Corporate" editions that are usually found on warez sites. They're for installing onto dozens/hundreds of computers with the same license and generally no activation required.

Notice how it specifically says you cannot legally resell it. Be careful about buying something like that.

The bottom of the CD says "Not for Resale" He might be legit but the software proably isn't. There are places on the net you can download origional covers and put them on your own burns. Be careful, if this aint legal you could have problems wit WGA.

I understand that he is breaking the rules, same goes for Academic Software. It is an older XP disc and he will include a separate SP2 Disc. He says that Microsoft sends him updated discs (ie. SP2 version) but automatic updates gives you the same thing. He sounds pretty legit and I'm going to meet him up later. For $30 wth.

So which is it? If you want to use pirated software, just download the ISO from a torrent.

He likely has access to a volume license copy of XP. Volume licenses are usually sold to businesses and do not require activation. A number of volume license keys have been blacklisted in SP2 because they were pirated excessively, but even if his key works you're still paying for pirated software.

So volume licensing is considered "pirated" because you can't get updates? Is that why MS sends updated CDs so you can mass install?

It's considered "pirated" because you are violating the original terms of the licensing agreement. As soon as he resells that key, it is considered a pirated copy.

So several sealed copies can have the same cd key?

Yes, they can. But you are missing the point. If he has a Volume License Key then that software MUST
only be installed by / at the company if was Originally Sold & Licensed To. The original buyer is NOT
allowed to RESELL the License or the Keys or to Install or Allow the program to be Installed outside of
the company it was Originally Sold To.

If you do, and someone complains, say the company has 1000 Licenses and they have used 800
100 are sold by an inside IT Guy. .. Now suddenly, the company expands and has a need for the other 200
licenses .. they go to install & 100 work fine ... now it says invalid key since all 1000 are used

So who do you think will call MS and complain ? ? ... The company who paid for it, that's who.
Next thing you know MS gives them a new key and BLACKLISTS the KEY that was illegally SOLD.

Happens a lot.
