In layman's terms if possible. ;-)

I undestand it will allow DirectX 10, which will boost game performance by 6-8 times.

Uhmm I hate to say it, but DX10 sure won't boost game performance by 6-8 times ;) enable new features ,perhaps :p

Vista will (in theory) have better networking performance in some instances, have a new (it's ugly imho, but some people like it) 3d-ish interface, better security, more media features, etc.

talked to my friend who works for m$, nice job to, lucky ******...anyways.
he said the GUI is different, encryption of folders/files will be much strong (very security based OS), previewing files before you actually open them (we have that now, dont we? i guess maybe he meant documents)...otherwise, i think it's just gonna be a much more flashier version, i think ill wait for the 2nd release if i HAVE TO have it, or decide to switch to Linux (which would be nice, but i got this learning curve fear of it.

I am pretty cautious about being excited for Vista.
With all the stupid DRM issues for gosh sakes, you will have to have crazy hardware to run it correctly (IIRC)
By the time it is out, Ubuntu will have an even better release out (off topic I know)
my two cents... :p

Man there is alot different about it, yeah like atyberg says might be nutty, at least for me the latest February release I've got a AMD XP 3000+ with 1 GB ram and I had all the services killed that where not needed and it still ran like crap all sticky and sluggish, so I was not impressed, but then again a Beta Windows OS you can't expect much or compare it to a Unix Beta OS and expect good performance with it at this point in time, but I would exepect as a final OS it will run pretty nice, at least we all hope so.

To address a couple of points, you won't need to have 'crazy' hardware to run it. I'm currently testing the CTP builds on a variety of hardware from a P3 1GHz laptop with 512MB to a P4 2.8 with 1GB. The P4 is obviously faster, but the P3 seems to cope well so far. I'd expect the performance to increase through each development cycle as wwell.

There's an awful lot of FUD about Vista - I'd advise people to search on here as the benefits/advantages/performance etc of Vista have all been pretty well laid out

It just seems it will be a more bloated edition of Windows XP. It may have slightly better security, but none of which can't be achieved with Windows XP SP2 and good third party software and user habits. Windows XP is already a good OS. We don't need Vista. It will only require a lot more system resources which will suck for resource intensive foreground applications. Just stick with Windows XP as it is already a good OS and there is no need for Vista.

Vista is way overrated at this time!! Let it be delayed until 2010 for all I care!! I am not looking forward to having to disable all the bloated garbage it will throw at us for those of us that hate it!! Some of the bloat will probably be forced on us and thus no way to disable it!! :( :(

And yet there are people who like that crap (old people who don't know sh!t about computers. My grandmother is like this). The only reason Windows is still alive is because of its user friendliness, and its decade long reighn without almost any major competition that has forced everything to be compatable with it. Still, I expect it will die in a decade or so. My generation (I'm 18) mostley knows how to use computers, and almost everyone I know is pissed at MS for some reason or other. Once people learn more about computers, they will see Windows for the Sh!t it is.

Also, it looks like MS is running out of ideas. They made Windows a skin for DOS, then transferrd it to the NT platform. Now they can do little more than add more fluff. Unless they switch from NT, Windows will eventually die.

The Windows 95 platform is not the same as the NT platform. It wasn't transferred over. Instead of making moronic comments like "they can do little more than add more fluff" why not take a look at the changes that have happened since the original NT in 1993? Keep in mind that 95, 98 and ME are not on the NT platform. 2k, and XP descend from NT, and NT Workstation.

While I do not think Vista provides much more for the home user, trolls like you who make dumb ass comments really show the pinnacle of idiocy when it comes to OS knowledge. Windows is not sh!t (with the exception of ME) and if you knew a damn thing about what you were talking about you'd know it's piss poor app programming that causes the majority of problems in Windows, not Windows itself.

If windows is sh!t than quantify your argument. What makes Windows sh!t? Stash, spherrod, Smilin, I and others will be happy to discuss.

I'm not sure how much time I'm willing to waste on someone who refers to the changes in Vista as 'fluff'. When he does development work for an OS used by hundreds of millions of people around the world, spanning many cultures, preferences and skillsets, then maybe we can talk.

But until then I'm not going to dignify his insults against many hard working developers with any more of a response.

I wouldn't say Windows is sh!t. However, the Windows 95/98/ME opertaing systems were sh!t!! The Windows NT based flavors of Windows were pretty good. Windows XP is a wonderful OS as it is. I relaly don't see much need for Vista for a while yet. Windows XP does everything anyone needs to do on today's PC hardware.

Stash, what do you think of the new control panel? I think it is the most horrid thing I have ever used.
I like Aeroglass, hate Aero (WinXP style with Royal, third party theme looks better).
I want to try it on my gaming rig as it gets closer to release to see if the new video/sound architecture is more stable. I love the new sound control panel (single best upgrade IMHO was the audio architecture).

Anyways Vista feels like someone has put layers of FLUFF to impede me from access to my system options. LUA(is it still called this) is great but I still need to elavate myself to just about anything. I can't use a classic style login without fast user switching(as far as I can see so far, may be hidden somewhere).

Many of Vista's features are just integration of what a lot of 3rd party utilities do already. They make it a lot harder to access your network connetions settings without going through a wizard.

Can't have a system group policy without a domain?

Windows Vista has a lot of new features, if you watch some of the channel9 stuff you will see them. I believe that a lot of them will go unused, and there is a lot that microsoft is coping from 3rd party applications or other operating systems. Much of the interface can be done in Windows XP, but I don't think that any application can get as close to the integration vista provides.

BTW Stash, people have the right to call Vista fluff, they already own XP, Vista won't do much more for them, and upgrading to a new OS can be expensive.IMHO Microsoft wanted this to be their operating system to fight back against the competition by giving them a superior option, I believe over time they have fallen short of their mark.

Well it isn't perfect, but luckily I can take metro to work everyday. If I had to drive, I would kill myself. I live in an urban area, so I don't feel like I'm in a suburban nightmare, but I'm not in DC either. So it's a good mix.
