... you're going to buy a new computer so you can play Halo 2? I'm speechless.

Somebody else will come along and help you, but my mind is too boggled right now. Sorry. More importantly, you didn't tell us how much money you were willing to spend or anything. It's like you walked into a car dealership and said "I want a good car." What, exactly, do you want us to do?

That incorporates a lot...the key things to remember are:
1. Vista was originally designed as a 64 bit only OS. MS has since announced that they will also release a 32bit version in the first generation, but I would start with the 64bit (which means either AMD or an Intel with EM64T)
2. Some of the "eye candy" will require a DX9 capable graphics card, so be careful if you get on-board video (GeForce 6100 chipset is my own preferred).
3. Absolute minimum RAM (IMHO) will be 512MB, 1GB would be better...

Since you are obviously a gamer, you will want a higher end video card and an AMD CPU...go with the GeForce 7800 and whatever CPU fits your budget. Then it all depends on your other uses (for multitasking, a dual core would be best...).

$200? Damn, I sure do love being a pirate... of the seven seas, of course -- certainly not software... certainly not...

I like ellipses.

Unless you really need a new system now you might as well wait. I'll be surprised if Vista ships before the holidays and who knows what you'll be able to get for the same wad of $$ by then.

Just buy an Xbox (or even an Xbox 360), it'll be cheaper than upgrading your system.

Student pricing will probably be half the price of the normal price. When I was taking some courses at the local college thats what I saw XP going for at the college book store. I wouldnt worry about Vista until it actually launches though. MS has been known to have delayed launches on their OSes so it could even get pushed back for all we know. No matter how good Vista is alot of people wont upgrade right away. XP is a very good O/S, as far as MS OSes go, and many wont want to bother until Vista is proven better.

That obviously varies, because I can get XP and XP64 in one package for about $11 (but it's been since the beginning of last semester that I bought it, so that could figure could be off by +/- $2). Vista might be more expensive when it comes out, but I don't know why it would be any different than XP when comparing equivalent packages (Vista is rumored to come in a ton of different "flavors").

Yaharr me hearties! Care to trade ye plunder?

Im not paying $200 for windows XP with a few bells, i want windows vienna! Somthing that nothing old will work on anymore, a clean slate. In saying that ill probably be sitting with vista a year or two from now. As for a future vista setup, build one when vista is actually released or is about to be released. You will get better performance per $ that way. Or more performance for the same amount.

AND!

I got no idea when vistas due to be released, but Intels new architecture might be out by then, im waiting for that before i get a new rig.

DirectX 10 is coming. Wait for a video card that can support this and you will be happy with performance on vista.

Otherwise, just get vista becuase it rules!

Which version? The one for single processors, dual processors, quad or eight way?

Seriously, I read somewhere that there might be like 7 versions of this thing.

-DirectX still requires certain hardware features. Ever wonder why the GeForce4 Ti series is DirectX 8 compatible and the Radeon 9500 and higher are DX 9.0 compatible? It's the hardware. If I'm not mistaken Halo can drop back to DX 8 or 7 mode for older cards like your hunk of crap SiS card. If it even runs Halo it's probably 640x480 in DX 7 or 8 mode with every option on low, and still a slideshow.

-If you don't like the Xbox 360, then buy an Xbox and get Halo 2 and play tomorrow if you want. If you get a 360 at a semi-reputable store you won't pay anything over MSRP except sales tax.

-Yeah, Crytek is making a new game. What about it?
