OK...I am finally making the plunge to Vista and figured I since I got a free copy from work I would give it an install...

Got it up and running and I cannot for the life of me get Avira to install...

goes through the hoops and bombs on a Runtime Error!

Program: C:\...

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I didn't see a specific download for Vista or for Vista x64...

Am I missing something totally obvious here? Keep in mind I don't know all the pitfalls of Vista at the moment just trying it out.

Thanks in advance,
Lee

You might try downloading it again, could have been a defunct download

Nevermind...I don't know but the faithful multiple reboots and a right click and unblocking the executable seemed to do the trick...got the default install finished.

Is there a way to tell that it installed a 64 bit version?

Well, that's one way to solve a problem in Windows. :) Don't forget to upgrade to SP1, SP2 if you're MSDN/Technet. I'd stay away from the Public SP2 RC at this point because it needs to be uninstalled and RTW is probably not too far away.

Use Control Panel\System (Windows + Pause), it should say 64-bit somewhere if you're on 64-bit.

Check your Task Manager. 32-bit programs will have an asterisk (*) next to them.

I've got the 32-bit version installed right now. Is there a 64-bit version of the free edition?

well the version I got from the site is a 32 bit version...didn't see a download link for a vista 64 bit version...maybe that is for the premium version...

At least it works :)

There is no dedicated 64bit version. Also not for the premium version (which I have). Not necessary.
