Why should I upgrade from XP? If this has been discussed before will you supply me with a link? I can't seem to find anything on the subject in the search engine. Thanks.

One reason would be because its search works, unlike Anandtech's. :p

For real though, here is a wikipedia list of new/improved features.

maybe because you like eye candy... or possibly so you can tell people "I Have Vista"..though im sure most wouldn't really care overly to much... and also might be for the upped security :)

Vista Review

Go here scroll down a little and start with Vista Review. It is a long read, but it tells you about all of the features of vista.

Here are a couple of new key elements that Vista has.

First off, the desktop is run by the GPU instead of the CPU(at least mostly) so it takes the load off of your CPU while running just as smooth(to me).

Much higher security.
Has a lot of good little features(some you will use, and some you won't).

Down side is driver support may be somewhat limited right now but will pick up as time goes and it becomes more popular. Also, if you are a gamer, certain games will run slower. I play lots of games and I decided to go ahead and take the performance loss, but it hasnt' been too bad for the games I play.

ricleo2,

Go to the Microsoft Download Centre and get the Windows Vista Product Guide (WVPG RTM.docx); http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta...-4a12-afe1-5b40b2ad3725&DisplayLang=en

Strangely, Microsoft must believe that this document is only of interest to existing Vista users as it is in the new Word/Office 2007 format. However, you can load a reader for earlier versions.

Although the document is long, it is an excellent read which highlights the improvements over XP IMHO.

From what I've read, quite a bit of stuff. I do hope anything that really is useful and good that isn't already found in linux can be eventually implented in some form or another in the distros (Such as....Ubuntu ;) )

isnt the primary reason for a PC gamer to upgrade to Vista so the new games take advantage of dx10?

Am I the only one who thinks the marketing people(all of them, not the ones at MS specifically) should be fired?
They can't seem to come up with any decent name for anything these days.

Pentium, cool sounding name, Pent suggested 5'th, ium sounds like Titanium or some such, suggesting a strong 5'th generation product, or just a cool sounding name if you really don't care at all.
3dNow! was kinda lame, but still decent enough, and it DID benefit 3D apps a lot.
Athlon...wtf? Triathlon?
Core? Core??? It's a horrible movie for crying out loud! Why'd you give an awesome product such a ****** name?
ReadyBoost? Even more WTF? What the hell is that supposed to mean? Ready? Steady? *boost some steroids* Go!
ReadyDrive? What? My drive is ready? That's nice, seeing as my OS is up and running and all...

Sorry...I'm grumpy, but marketing names have gone from coolish, to semi-cool, to stupid, to retardedly annoying...plus I'm bored...

Oh and to make this post not TOO off topic, that review was actually pretty nice, good overview and all, thumbsup :)

Vista-exclusive DX10 will make the OS mandatory for gamers in about a year.

The Wikipedia link posted lists most of the many improvements of Vista compared to XP.

I've used the Vista Release Candidates quite a bit, and I like the OS, though I'm not ready to upgrade personally. XP still covers all my needs by far and wide.

When I build myself a new rig in 8-10 months, then we will see about upgrading. But not just yet :)

I just need something fresh and new. I'm just tired of XP...not that XP is that bad. And yes I have played around with Linux but didn't like it.
