ok. first of all, let's bypass the morality of the question at hand.
Let's just say the person in question used to use copied version of Windows, but now wants to go legit. ok... semi-legit. Because the said person wants to buy the Upgrade version only (but does not have legit copy of older version of windows). ok? can we do this?
Ways I've read about so far:
Install Vista on empty hard drive WITHOUT inputting CD-Key, then do IN-PLACE upgrade.
This works, right? I've read mostly positive stuffs on this method, although nothing definitive...
But how about an upgrade launched from Win2000?
This forces a "clean install" (the one where windows copies the old files into 'windows.old' directory, but functionally does a brand new install w/o any old settings).
Also, Win2000 does not have wga or activation. With XP, you had to activate and pass wga before allowing Vista Upgrade. (which meant you couldn't use 1 legit copy of XP to do multiple upgrades... again, please indulge me).
Only possible problem: could microsoft actually do a Windows 2000 CD-Key check (for blacklisted keys) before allowing the Vista Upgrade?
I've read around, but didn't find any discussions on this particular scenario...
Opinions please.
