Windows Vista Update access failures

So, after last Tuesday's large assortment of Windows updates for a variety of Windows version, I finally got around to the oddball in the house which was the laptop. Its the wife's laptop (HP DV6-1030US), and she hasn't used it in the past 2-3 months.

The computers in the house running XP Pro and W7 Pro all had no trouble performing Window updates, but this laptop is running Vista and it is failing to access the Update server. Other than the standard software package HP installed, the only other thing installed is Firefox and M$ Office.

Anyway, I keep getting the same error even though I have network access (and can surf just fine). Specifically, I am getting the 80072EE2 error, and I even followed the advice/instructions per M$ in an attempt to resolve. Unfortunately, it hasn't helped.

The only AV software was the factory included trial of Norton, which I long ago disabled. This didn't seem to prevent usage of the laptop in the Internet. Last night I gave up and performed an HP system restore, which restores the laptop to factory configuration.

That last effort took a couple of hours--or so it seemed--but it didn't resolve the problem and this morning it persists. I've included the following URLs in the trusted sites group per the M$ suggestion, too:

http://*.updates.microsfot.com
https://*.updates.microsfot.com
http://*.download.windowsupdate.com

Anyone else got any other ideas. Before doing an HP system restore I noticed the last update was very early July. Not sure if that was the last time we initiated the last update, or that was when the problem began.

So, every time I tried to access a Microsoft site for Vista SP2, for IE8/9, etc. the installed IE7 would lock up. To get around this, I installed Firefox and tried to install IE9, but then I had to backup and install SP2 for Vista.

With Vista SP2 installed, I got IE9 installed and working, and then installed Microsoft Security Essentials. I also used the HP software to let it do its own updates, but in the end Windows Vista Update still was not working and continued with the 80072EE2 error.

My computers with XP Pro and W7 Pro have no problems.

Well, I noticed a link in the Windows Vista Update application screen regarding installed updates. I took a look and there seems to be some KB*** based updates. I wonder if this is the result of my having Windows decide on the updates and not the user?

Anyway, do not depend on M$ Security Essentials to replace your AV responsibility. Wife Googled something, chose a link, and within it was a link to some domain in India and before we knew it Security Essentials went ballistic because of detected Trojans and malicious code.

Not knowing the impact, the clicking 20 times or so to have Security Essentials handle the issue, I then chose to call it a day and boot back into System Restore and reinstalling everything again.

I've seen pretty much every AV program let malware be installed. None are perfect, nor even close.
