It appears that nothing was working because my CPU heatsink was not bolted down correctly. And my CPU temps were idling around 100 C. I went back and correctly installed it and now they are at 40 C.

This is a lesson in not being impatient while putting new components together.

Excuse me while I go pull out my new gray hairs.

****Update again****

Just tried installing Windows Vista Ultimate x64. After hitting any key to run off the DVD, it went into a windows is loading files, it completed that task, now it stays on a black screen.

And it appears it is frozen again. wahoo!

Is there something very simple i could be doing wrong here? or set something up wrong.

So apparently need to load SATA drivers when installing WinXP. I downloaded the drivers from intels website for ICH9R chipset.

In BIOS, I went to "On-Chip ATA Devies" set the RAID MODE to AHCI (IDE, RAID, AHCI were the options) and proceeded to try and install the OS through F6 and load the drivers.

I have a slew of options so I chose the one relevent to the ICH9R.

INTEL(R) ICH9 SATA AHCIController (Desktop ICH9R)

I select that one and then on the next screen hit Enter to continue and windows setup still freezes.

I also went back to BIOS and ATA devices and attempted the RAID configuration but that also failed.

And the IDE setting is what was using during the post below.

So i am really confused.

WinXP Pro SP1
Intel C2D 6850 3.0 ghz
MSI P35 Platinum
MSI NVIDIA 8800GTX
2 GB OZC

If winxp sp2 is needed. I will probably go out and buy Windows Vista. And would buying Vista solve this dilemma?

OLD POST
When doing a fresh install on to a SATA hard drive. Windows goes through the normal loading of the drivers and such process. But when it gets to "Setup is starting Windows". It gets hung up.

I have switched between IDE CD/DVD and SATA CD/DVD drives to see if that could be a problem. But there was no difference.

During the loading screen I pressed F5 and manually selected ACPI Multiprocessor. Which of course didn't work. Which doesn't surprise me because I don't really know what it means.

I have followed these steps here.

WinXP Pro SP1
Intel C2D 6850 3.0 ghz
MSI P35 Platinum
MSI NVIDIA 8800GTX
2 GB OZC

Windows appears to not like me these days.

Are you adding the latest sata drivers via f6 when install starts?

I hit F6 and it takes me to a screen that starts off with "Setup was unable to load support for the mass storage device you specified."

It has

<none>

So i assume it doesn't recognize it.

Am i going to need a floppy drive for this?

I am having a hard place finding a place to download SATA drivers. I found a forum site with a post that contained this...

Si3112r.inf
Si3112r.mpd
Si3112r.sys
SIISUPP.VXD
SIWinAcc.sys
TxtSetup.oem
With these files on a floppy, once loaded at the beginning of the XP install procedure, it will find your SATA HDD & offer you the option to install XP on that drive.

So i am currently looking for these files
