Windows Vista: The complete picture

It's pointless to look at it right now anyway because a lot of the major UI changes haven't happened yet, wait 'till at least beta2.

Actually, you have it ass backwards. Most of Beta 1 is comprised of exactly that. The nuts of Vista, however, isn't really present, and will make a much larger showing in Beta 2.

UGH! Those sections are painful to look at. Terrible design.

Agreed...

Which sections?...I dont get it..

the site seems to be neat and simple yet effective..whats the problem u guys found?
When you click a link, you get a long, narrow column of tiny text...no one is going to read that.

Thanks for the screenshots, and thank you for using PNG. It's one of the best things (generally) for simple screenshots.

It looks like WinXP with a new theme. I hope it has more enhancements than that.

And that Techslash site....what the heck were they thinking with that design? A poorly shaped javascript popup window for everything. Ugh.

Looking at early beta stuff is fun. 🙂

I hope you're kidding, the desktop shots were about a meg a piece because he used PNG. Converting them to JPG with ImageMagik with no options takes them down to ~700K and using Gimp to resave one as JPG took it down to ~250K and looks just as good, IMO.

And it's your opinion. JPG compression stilll screws up the images, which is exactly why I use PNG. If you don't have the connection, don't click the links.

As was already stated, that's all this build really is. At least it's a stable prettier WinXP. 🙂

JPG can screw them up, but I converted one of the images that he had up and I couldn't see any compression and the text was all fine. And I do have the connection, I just think it's stupid to host a file that's 4x as large as it needs to be.

So is Vista gonna be one of those transition operating systems that everybody passes over (like Windows ME)?

It seems that the move from XP to Vista will be more like the transition from 2000 to XP, that is, a little GUI improvment, some security fixes, and some general useability enhancements, but nothing fantastic. Nothing like the 98/ME to 2000 transition.

I like the file transfer window. It's cheeky, but you can actually see how fast the data is moving between drives.

Well I've got "the connection" (100 base/ full duplex) but still don't like the wait/size of the d/l.. but don't let my opinion hurt your feelings. Jeez.

You guys have stop with this drivel, Windows Vista is a HUGE beakthrough for Microsoft. They are changing major things. The problem is that most people aren't smart enough or don't write apps to understand that this is MAJOR surgery.

Look at the Partial List: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=38&threadid=1653351
