Windows Vista - System sounds don't work...

None of the system sounds play when they are supposed to. For example, if you press backspace in an open Run window and there's nothing there, it's supposed to go DING! But it's not doing that. My laptop's speakers are working completely fine. If I find the individual files and play them, they work fine. If I open the sound settings and test the sound files there, they work.

So basically, the sounds are enabled, I can hear them when I test them, but they just won't play as they're supposed to.

I don't know what I did for this to happen because the system sounds did work a couple of weeks ago for sure. I don't know when they stopped working.

What should I do?

You mean choose the Default scheme? I have tried that. Did not help.

check to make sure the default has not been replaced with one that has no sounds for any of the default actions.
