Windows Vista Slow Copy & Paste Files?

So, I installed vista on a new machine and everything is working fine until I decide to move some files around and I notice that it is very very very slow. Then I google and find that there is a major problem with Vista slowing down the transfer of files.

I never saw this problem mentioned on anandtech and am wondering what those familiar with vista did to fix it and what they thought about such an incredible oversight in an OS released with such a major bug?

I am simply amazed that the automatic updates didnt already fix this issue and that I have to find out about it online. WTF is wrong with MS?

Wow, thread surfaces from long ago. 😕 Moved from Software For Windows to Operating Systems.

Well I found the answer to the issue that fixed it for me but WTF why would it install with the default like this.

Start >> Control Panel >> Programs and Features

Click on " Turn windows features on or off" on the left side of the panel

Takes a sec to load all the features

Uncheck "Remote Differential Compression"

Click Okay and wait.

Files transfer fast like XP now.

Hmm....I'll have to give that a try when I get home. I have noticed a big slowdown as well. Thanks!

what exactly is this Remote Differential Compression. Wikipedia says, "RDC is a client-server synchronization protocol that allows the contents of two files to be synchronized by communicating only the difference between them. It was introduced with Windows Server 2003 R2." So why does this affect local file transfer? Does is automatic create the difference of the same file during transfer even though it local, if so this would explain slow downs and a bug MS needs to fix.

Well i tested sending a 808MB file from one HD to another and with the option checked i get 18 seconds and the option unchecked i get 18 seconds. What improvements did you see Luthien as my system doesn't seem to have any. But than again i never notice a decrease in file transfer in vista than my winxp.

File transfers don't seem slow to me (and I transfer a lot of files a day from my PC to my server)... but I have huge latency issues when opening drives.

Windows Vista Ultimate. I don't know why I got the slow down but the fix I posted worked and the problem is gone.

The transfer of files between drives, copy and pasting them within the same drive, and deleting files was taking way to long. In relation to a 10 MB file to all the above tasks it would take about a minute!

4800 AM2 system with 4 GB ram. x86 32bit version of vista ultimate.

When I noticed this obvious slow down I googled it and found the solution after a little looking and lots of complaints about it. Definately a bug and the automatic updates didnt fix it automatically.

Yep it is also around the net about the file transfers through your network being incredibly slow as well.

If you had the issue you would know it. It is blatently obvious. Say you want to move a few gigs from one HD to another on the same pc it would normally take a few minutes. Well with my issue it would take hours. Moving small files would take a few minutes instead of a few seconds, etc. If you don't have a blaring obvious slow down then you don't have this issue. Many people have reported the same problem.

A few searches and I found this thread. Want to give it a bump.

Copied a 10 gig folder of pics in about 5 minutes after making this change. Prior to the change the countdown clock kept going UP and UP and UP, well past 5 minutes, and I cancelled.
