I need to know what version vista retail to buy on newegg. Including dvd vs cdrom where applicable.

That all depends on what you want to do. Go here and find the version that suits your needs best. All of the versions come on the same DVD - and your key ID determines which you can install.

From what I read business or ultimate version are not worth the extra cost. I think most gaming pc's use home premium.

Home premium is the best bang for the buck - and is equal to XP Media Center. I have tried all versions and I can tell you that the Ultimate is an ultimate ripoff - Business is like XPPro.

If you plan on heavy camcorder use or would like to use your computer as a all-in-one entertainment center, then Home Premium is what your looking for, otherwise, Home Basic will suffice.

Yeah Ultimate was a bit too expensive. If I was to do it over again, I'd get Home Premium. Although, I'm surpirsed that more laptops aren't shipping with Ultimate, where the bit-locker HD encryption might actually be a useful addition in the event of theft.
