I will need Vista as I have an 8800GTS and want to play Crysis in DX10 mode. Should I buy now or wait for Crysis to come out?

Thanks!

I don't think pricing has ever really changed on an MS product during it's life. You may find some occasional deals from vendors but I would guess it's not changing.

Inflation will make it cheaper as time goes on, as long as Microsoft doesn't actually change the price.

Sounds the the local computer guy doesn't understand the difference between XP OEM and retail.

But I don't remember the price of it when it came out, so whatever. I suppose you could wait 2-3 years and find out if Vista has a price drop before you buy it.

Regardless of whether or not this is true, I don't think the price of Vista will go down because it is currently the same price as Windows XP. If XP had 6 years to drop in price and Vista already matches that price, this is probably as low as Vista will go.

considering the reports of crappy hardware and driver support, and that the game you want isnt even out yet....i dont see why youd do anything *but* wait

Actually I don't think that this is as big of an issue as it's made out to be. Vista has literally tens of thousands of stable drivers included with the install disk. And in my case if it didn't include drivers for some quirky piece of hardware it found it promptly with Microsoft Update.

Honestly I think the "issues" really only hurt the gaming crowd because of the improving video drivers. Granted sound isn't as bad but it still needs some work too.

Overall I don't think it was that bad of a launch. I've had no issues with my Vista systems (minus Python IDLE). Very happy.

My Vista works fine but with mostly 'newer' hardware with the exception of an audigy 2 card. (with no 5.1 sound on direct sound games)..

I would go ahead and get it now and get used to it..i mean if your building your own computer and are categorized as a 'computer enthusiast' why wouldn't you?

Also, get the OEM version and ignore the horror stories of not being able to reuse vista when you upgrade or build a new computer...

Actually, NOW is probably one of the better times to buy Vista, even if you won't use it immediately. As others pointed out, prices on Microsoft software seldom change. XP has dropped slightly now because of Vista's release, but XP prices held solid for about five years.

Deals right now include the Vista Family plan (Vista Home Premium upgrades for $50 when purchased with a copy of Retail Vista Ultimate) and the various free stuff given with Vista OEM versions.

I would suggest Retail right now too. You'll likely replace your PC over the lifetime of Vista and if you have retail you'll never have to buy again. If buying XP right now I would go OEM if possible.

Many people have reported being able to activate Vista multiple times using the OEM version...

Many people did this in XP too. Doesn't mean we really condone it on this board tho.

I understand...makes me look like some kind of software thief:D
Honestly, if I only have Vista installed on one machine I don't see the issue...EULA or not..
