Windows Vista Performance Rating (Built in benchmarking in Vista?)

Found this little tool in Vista:

Under Control Panel >> System and Maintenance >> Performance Rating and Tools

Looks like it heavily "tests" the graphics subsystem.. but it does test everything. Here's mine:

Processor: 3.1 (Sempron 2800+ - S754 Sempron 64 - on 32-bit Vista)
Memory: 2.7 (1GB G.Skill + 512MB Corsair VS PC3200 @ 333MHz)
Primary hard disk: 3.8 (Seagate 7200.8 SATA)
Graphics: 4.6 (Geforce 6800 128MB PCIe)
Gaming Performance: 4.8

Overall Rating: 2

Yay! I got a 2! Not bad for a Sempron 2800+......... NOT!

Ya think? About 20GB more maybe. I knew 1.5GB wasn't going to be enough...

Here's mine

Processor: 3.1 - XP Mobile Barton at 2.2GHz
Memory: 3.4 - 1 GB PC3200
Primary hard disk: 3.9 - Seagate 80 GB 7200 ATA
Graphics: 5.9 - ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
Gaming Performance: 4.2

Overall Rating: 3

Not bad for an old system and everything seems to run fine but it is sometimes sluggish.

My system is fairly new; it's ratings by Vista x64 are as follows:

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ -- 5.2
Memory: 4.00GB -- 4.9
Hard disk: 48.82GB free (74.53GB total) -- 3.7
Graphics: NVIDIA Geforce 6600 -- 3.5
Graphics memory: 128MB -- 4.0

Looks like I'll need a Raptor 150GB and an updated graphics card to get a 4 performance rating.

Processor: 3.7 - AMD 64 3000+
Memory: 3.6 - Corsair XMS PC3200 1 Gig
HD: 3.7 - Seagate SATA 200Gigs
Graphics: 5.9 - 6800 GT
Gaming: 3.7

It would help if people posted the component names with the ratings (especially if you don't have a system rigs link in your signature), so we could get a feel for how things are being rated. 🙂

Processor: Athlon 64 3500 3.6
RAM: 1.0 GB 5.9
HD: 21.67 GB free (152.66 GB Total) 3.8
Graphics: Radeon x800 Pro 5.9
Gaming Graphics: 384 MB 5.1

Overall: 3

Well, it's about right. The chain is only as strong as the weakest link. How well a system flows is determine by the bottleneck. Need any more analogies? If you're unhappy with the 2, then get a better computer. Or don't pay so much attention to a benchmark if you're happy with how your computer is performing.

AMD Athlon 2500+ OCed to 3100---3.2
RAM Crucial 1.5GB PC3200----------3.2
HDD 40 GB 7200 WD(my second HDD
of 200GB is not working yet)---------3.2
ATI Radeon X850 XT-----------------5.9
Gaming Graphics-256MB -----------5.6

Overall-3

Thank you for completely missing the point of the post Looney... of course one can't expect much more from you.

Processor Dual Core AMD Opteron 165 5.4
Ram 2GB 5.9
Primary hd 4.0
Graphics Nvidia GeForce 7900GT 5.9
Gamming Graphics 256 MB 5.9

Overall Rating 4

Based on what I've seen here, the RAM ratings seem.... weird.

CPU: 3.4 (1.8 Ghz A64)
RAM: 5.1 (2GB)
HDD: 4.0 (70GB free)
GPU: 5.9 (X1800XT)
VRAM: 5.8 (512MB)

And your whining has made yet another thread such an engaging discussion.

Indeed. My current theory is that the performance analyzer is very sensitive to memory bandwidth and timings, which are then weighted much more heavily than capacity in the final rating. My system, for example, gets a 3.5 rating for memory at 333MHz, and a 4.9 at 400MHz. I haven't changed timings yet to see what that does, but it might be interesting.

I decided to bump up my FSB from 166 to 200 and see what differences I get

MD Athlon 2500+ OCed to 3200---3.2 -----3.3
RAM Crucial 1.5GB PC3200----------3.2 ---3.6
HDD 40 GB 7200 WD(my second HDD

ATI Radeon X850 XT-----------------5.9 ---5.9
Gaming Graphics-256MB -----------5.6 ----5.6

Overall-3

Interesting - I installed Vista x64, and my CPU and Memory went up by .1 each. Video went down, but I believe that's because the NVIDIA Vista x64 drivers never actually installed ("bluescreened" instead - well, "blackscreened").

Athlon 4000+ - 3.6
1GB RAM - 5.9
36GB Raptor - 3.9
7800GTX (not sure if SLI is accounted for) - 5.9
256MB Graphics Memory - 5.8

Overall - 3

hmmm, it looks like RAM is rated by the speed of whatever you have rather than how much RAM you have.

I have 1.5 GB and get a 3.5. You have less and get a 5.9, and I saw someone else has 512 and got a 5.9 also.

I got:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 3.2
RAM: 1 GB 3.4
HDD: 20 GB Partition 3.9
GPU: GeForce 7800GS 5.9
VRAM: 256MB 5.6

Overall 3

😕

I got a 3 with the home rig from signature. I'll post the individual breakdowns later, since I'm back in XP after Vista locked up trying to config the media center settings. Since it was audio, I'll chalk it up to creative.....

****Edit*****

Processor: 3.6 (Athlon 64 4000+ - 32-bit Vista)
Memory: 5.1 (1GB Corsair)
Primary hard disk: 3.8 (WD 80GB SATA)
Graphics: 5.9 (ATI X800XL PCIe w/ATI Vista Beta2 drivers)
Gaming Performance: 5.3

Seems 3 is the average among us geek-enthusiast types.

I wonder what rating Soccermom Peg would get in her Compaq.
