Windows Vista - OEM CD Key Question

Hey all,

A friend's computer is running terribly and I believe the best solution is to re-install Windows. However, they have a recovery DVD from HP that contains that additional annoying crapware that will be installed if I use it.

Question: If I installed my OEM of Windows Vista, would the HP Windows serial number be accepted? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

You could use the recovery disk and uninstall the crapware after you get to the basic installation working. The advantage would be that the disk will install all of the original drivers without having to download them. You'll still have to update both Windows and the drivers, but you won't have to worry about missing any installing inc

Fortunately, my experience has been that HP machines will let you uninstall the extra garbage.

Thanks for the quick replies!

I think it is easier to just install the OEM that I have. I have a fast connection and downloading the drivers should be quick and easy.

You would think so, but a lot of times OEMs don't make drivers available and you have to go digging on the internet to find them. You may end up with half-way working drivers, old drivers and other stuff.

I would just do a restore using the included disks and then uninstall the "bloat ware" using the Programs control panel.
