I can't get KB938371 to install on a vista ultimate 32bit system. It keeps saying failed with an error code 80073712. Any ideas on how to remedy this.

I have disabled my antivirus/firewall to no avail.

I installed about 8 or so updates lastnight, one failed (KB937287)to install, however after I rebooted and the others installed fine (rebooted twice) the failed one installed fine, just make sure you click on Windows update and download the failed update again after the reboots.

No, i don't even know what that is.

Vista alerted me that there were updates. I believe there were 11 of them. All installed except this one.

try this -

Error Code 80073712
After a long search, some good inputs, here finally a procedure that worked
for me:
All credits to CogitoErgoSum on forums, hereunder his procedure with a
slight modification:

I assume MS will deliver a patch sooner or later for this issue... however, I
fixed it with the help of MS Support.

DISCLAIMER: This solution fixed the problem for me, I cannot guarantee it
will fix it for anybody else! Moreover, renaming system files might corrupt
your system!!!

The issue is that the WUA 3.0 (7.0.6000.374) upgrade is corrupted,
essentially the system reports the WUA to be 7.0.6000.374 but the files on
the disk are still from the old version (you can check some of the DLLs like
wups.dll, wuaueng.dll etc... in the windows\system32) ... and you cannot
install the WUA 3.0 even manually.

delete the following file:

C:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml

Since Windows security will not allow you to do this, hereunder the
procedure to take ownership of the file:

run a command prompt with "Run as Administrator".
Type in the following commands:

takeown /f C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml

cacls C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml /G <YourUsername>:F

then delete the file
Reboot the machine, then manually install the WUA 3.0 downloadable from
here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

This should fix the Error 80073712 when the other solutions do not work.

BE AWARE that renaming C:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml might have
unrecoverable impacts on your Vista installation

My files are newer than the ones listed here. I believe this fix was for a different but similar issue.

Unfortunately this doesn't work. KB937267 is already installed and when i turn off all the stuff in the list the KB938371 won't install. I'm hoping that i really isn't needed to install SP1.

Found another,

Vista update KB938371 fails to install. error code 80073712 - MowGreen [MVP]
11-Mar-08 03:02:04

The errror indicates Windows Update file corruption. Check for the
presence of pending.xml in C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS and delete it, if present.

If the above does not resolve the error, then see if reinstalling the
latest Version of the Windows Update Agent does -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946928
Use this article for your guide on installing it -

or this one,

You can try the following method:

1. Click Start, in Start Search item, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter.

2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:

net stop wuauserv

net stop Cryptsvc

ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SD.old

ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start Cryptsvc

3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose Save when you are prompted to save the file. Type "register.bat" as the file name and choose Desktop from the left panel as the location.

4. Refer to the Desktop and right click the register.bat file, then choose Run as administrator.

5. You will see a DOS-like window processing.

Then try to install KB938371 again.
