Windows Vista gaming will be 10-15 percent slower than XP

I have heard word going around that Windows Vista gaming will be 10-15 percent slower than XP.

Look I'm not making this up, surf Google and you'll see this everywhere, so what really is going on here, is this truth or rumor?

I don't know if this is some prank The Inquirer conjured up, but there seems to be quite a stir with this information in the community, whoever put it out there.

I know someone is going to say this, so I guess I will. First, of all it is an incredibly biased site (MacDailyNews). Just look at their "take":
MacDailyNews Take: Yet another reason to Get a Mac. You can run XP and Vista on the Mac if you are so inclined, but you'll also have Mac OS X if you're into truly sexy UIs. See Apple's Mac OS X Leopard (due spring 2007) sneak peek here.
Its just another article to bash Windows and praise OS X. We won't know if Vista will be slower until there are official benchmarks on the final version of Vista will we? 😉

Oh BTW, I own a PC and Macbook and l love to use both XP and OS X

So use WinXP for your DirectX 7, 8 and 9 games, if 10-15% difference in framerate is really important. Considering how many other ways there are to make huge differences in framerate (AA level, resolution, texture detail settings, gpu/memory clockspeed, choice of video card, choice of driver version), I'm not going to lose sleep over it myself.

I wouldn't make a call on this till we have mature drivers for Vista. It's not fair to judge an OS based on the performance of beta drivers and a beta OS. Look how much better XP performs now than it did when we first got it.

I played FEAR on my RC1 Machine and could notice no loss in performance vs my XP setup (on the same computer).

If anything under Vista it played a bit smoother for me.

I experienced the same thing so I don't know what the fuss is about.

Nevertheless, Microsoft may be taking this into consideration with their Game Optimization Engine (correct term?) in Ultimate Edition. I have seen some theories that it disables Aero while running games to improve performance. Personally I bet it's a ploy to get the gaming marketing to spend more money on Ultimate.

OSx86, true don't worry about the MAC site, I was just showing one site I found out of the many out there talking on this subject, but true something I didn't think about, was this all done on beta, or RC software when drivers aren't mature. 😉

So although I haven't noticed a performance hit on the couple of games I've tested I should definately switch and get a Mac so that I can't run the game at all???

I think MacDailyNews.com has some iPenis envy.

It's like deja vu. When Win2k was coming out, people cried and moaned that it will be slower than Win98 in gaming. Many gamers went to the dual-boot option initially but the issue disappeared subsequently (how many benchmarks do you see using Win98 these days?). Even if the article is true, it probably will be still faster than running the same game in Mac (if possible at all). I have both Mac & Windows but the article is extremely biased and pretty useless IMHO.

I know that much.

See release notes for those nVidia drivers. I know the XP ones have some WoW issues. Not sure if this is your problem or not.

MacDailyNews Take: Yet another reason to Get a Mac.

Right, because even if games in Vista do have a lower frame rate, I guess you might as well just get a mac and not play any games.
