Windows Vista Build 5472...

Just checked. While 5472 is a CTP build, there is a CTP section in the MSDN subscriber download area for Vista. So, MSDN is a way. The other way, CTP, is closed. Usually, you need an invite to get into CTP.

You may be able to download RC1 when it is available (soon). But don't quote me on that, becuase it may be restricted to those who downloaded the public Beta2 and not opened fully to the public.

oh well...
anyone have any idea what the retail copy of Vista is going to cost (if and when it is finally officially released)?

That would definately deter me as well.
If Microsoft wanted to give all of us a "genuine advantage" they should significantly reduce the prices for their software.
If all their software was like $100 dollars, everyone would go get one and then they wouldn't have to worry about piracy.

That's a theory that gets floated constantly, and it has little merit. As long as it costs something, people will still pirate it.

Given that you can buy versions of XP for 100 bucks today, I'm optimistic that there will be some versions that cost about the same. Remember, 90% of Windows customers get their OS included with a new computer. And the other 10% is mainly the 'enthusiast' group, where the cost of the OS is frequently the smallest cost in their entire system (think $400+ video cards, etc).

I think you're crazy. People are cheap and lazy and it's usually easier and cheaper to download a pirated version than it is to go out and buy one. And that's only for those that care, most will just stick with whatever came on their computer when they bought it.

The whole reason that I am waiting to buy a new laptop is so that I do not have to pay extra to upgrade it to Vista when the time comes.
