You would still need a product key. And it does require activation....

Besides who would want to loose their beta tester privilages for you schmucks 😛

For those of us who will never be able to [legally] have it on our systems, there are a few screenshots over at the winsupersite (warning: he's a bit enthusiastic about anything MS-related, to say the least). 😉

Beta 2 is supposed to be public, it will also have much more hardware support (and the pretty gui should be better) so it shouldnt be that long before you can play with it.

After looking at the screenies...nothing really looks different save for the movement of a few things (which could probably be acheived as well with clever skinning)

So am I the only one guessing that the GUI won't change?

It's what's underneath that counts! I as a LAN Administrator am really looking forward to the new deployment capabilities of it. It looks like they have made great progress in making it easier to deploy this over a large amount of machines.

That is so true. Eye candy just slows down the computer. I like the new security features, the root password authentication is awesome. Oh wait, that won't stop people from typing it in anyways.

Hmm, Beta 1 out...time for me to go find this sh!t...🙂

Edit: Damn, that was fast.

Already out there...maybe i'll give this a whirl this weekend.

ahh man, I wish I could play. anyway does anybody have any idea how much the final product is goit to cost me?

Probably the same as XP and 2000 have...IIRC, retail is $299 and Upgrade editions are $199...OEMs will probably be ~$130-$150.

I installed the x64 version last night on my DFI Lanparty SLI-DR, and I could never get the thing to run without freezing for more than a minute. The installer is TONS better, it loads faster, and it does look pretty cool. I guess I'll try the 32 bit version tonight...

Is anyone going to host a download for us guys that do not have an account to download it from 🙁

Errr no.

That'd be illegal, & we wouldn't want that now, would we? :Q

If you can't find & acquire this...you don't deserve to have it 😉

N7 - Im just scared as to how nearly our identical our rigs are and how similar my answer was going to be to yours....

Seperated at birth? 😀

This is Beta 1, which is all about the fundamentals; Beta 2 is about polish and bling. That being said...the Start Menu, Explorer window, and Control Panel have all changed quite a bit already.

Read Paul Thurrott's Review for more detailed information.

Are they still using NTFS for the file system?
Yes, and it will stay that way for awhile. The WinFS beta will be released around the same time that Windows Vista goes gold.
