Vista doesn't have DX9 support atm (regardless of whether it's installed or not), and the drivers are very much immature (for both ATi and nVidia..heck, neither even have a CP if you use the LDDM drivers).

That and I'm betting that Vista (or at least large chunks of it) are compiled with debug settings to make reporting bugs easier.

I don't see why? I had a earlier version of longhorn and was able to run Warcraft 3, but it would start chugging really badly after 5 minutes.

hrmm, welp. i cant even really do a test with vista. it wont load right on my machine, keeps freezing during before installation starts, kinda werid. casue it worked fine on a pc at work.
winxp installs fine on my home machine, oh well. ill have to finish up this test later, or... if you guys want me to do a win2k3 server test i can do that, since im bored, hah.

It might be due to your overclock. Runing the A64 with 64 bit software has proven to further stress the chip than conventional 32 bit programs. Quite a few people on planetamd64 have had to clock their chips down a bit from their o/c settings. Just a guess.

I had no trouble installing at all. I just used the virtual drive that I have and it installed perfect. It rebooted itself and stayed on this one screen for about 15 minutes, maybe that where you thought it froze. It doesn't really freeze there, just does something.

hrmm, welp. im running the 32 bit version of vista, and i tried putting my cpu back to default settings, i reset the bios etc.
and it still kept freezing at the same spot, and im not talking software freeze, as in... just the install freezing, im talking the entire pc taking a crap.

pinkish/greenish colors come up at the top of the screen, almost like a video card problem, but its not the vid card cause its brand new, works fine in winxp. its not my memory, etc. my machine is fine, vista beta just happens to hate it unfortunately. :(

Due to immature drivers, no doubt.
Most likely. This probably won't be worth testing in earnest for another 6-12 months. Maybe longer...

You can boot up on a virtual drive?!?! How cool! I've been wondering how to check out Vista without a DVD burner :D
