It's a bit excessive to say the least. Any way to tone it down a bit?

TIA

I think if you turn off Indexing as well as Prefetch and ReadyBoost it will slow down the thrashing a great deal.

Thanks. Indexing is turned off. How do you turn off pre fetch?

I've got 8 gig of ram now. Would more help?

TIA

No, i actually experimented and after 6gb there really isnt a speed boost in my opinion.
I still have 8gb though, since ram is so cheap, i couldnt help myself.

And if you let indexing on, the hard drive thrashing would have calmed down after a day or so.
But no harm in turning it off if it doesnt matter to you anyway.

I wouldnt bother turning off prefetch, its one of the better features of Vista.
Once it gets used to your habits it will show.

Thanks for the reply.

I usually keep it running 24/7. I know that when it first boots up it thrashes the HD for some minutes. I think this is super pre fetch. But even when it runs continuously, it will sometimes start thrashing for no apparent reason. It's not any program I've installed that does any sort of scan like AVAST, it's something else. I think it's part of Windows because it doesn't seem to affect the performance of the computer.

Could this be MS uploading my HD to Redmond? lol

I know EXACTLY what you mean, same thing drove me nuts when i first installed vista.
I mean you keep saying "what in the world could this thing possibly be doing so much?!!"
And i disabled windows defender, prefetch and indexing to get rid of it.
And it did.

On my most recent install, i didnt disable any of them, im not exactly sure how many days it took, but it did eventually stop on its own and my pc doesnt do any of that thrashing out of nowhere or on startup anymore.

Now i do have all my updates including SP1, so it may be one of those that stops the thrashing, all i know is i have everything enabled and my hard drive doesnt thrash at all now.

If it bothers you too much before it settles down, heres the answer to your question.
Go to Administrative Tools/Services and Disable Superfetch and Windows Search services.

Like i said though, i do have everything enabled and my hard drive doesnt thrash at all now.
So either letting it go for a few days or one of the windows updates definately makes the thrashing go away also.
