Microsoft has updated its official Windows Vista "Get Ready" page with new information on its upcoming PC operating system. The updated page includes the system requirements for the OS' native 3D interface, "Windows Aero." According to the page, Aero will require:

A DirectX 9 class graphics processor that:
-Supports a WDDM Driver.
-Supports Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware.
-Supports 32 bits per pixel.

Adequate graphics memory:
-64 MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor less than 1,310,720 pixels
-128 MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolutions from 1,310,720 to 2,304,000 pixels
-256 MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolutions higher than 2,304,000 pixels
Meets graphics memory bandwidth requirements, as assessed by Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor running on Windows XP

does this mean u wont need a dirext x10 card to use vista to its full? I did the scan on my comp i have a 7800gtx and it said my card is fine.

I used their beta test app, and my Xpress 200 with 128mb of dedicated DDR-SDRAM (not UMA!) passed the Aero test fine. I wouldn't get too worked up about it.

Nope, but beta 2 is supposed to be coming by the end of next week.

Interestingly enough, my system meets all of the requirements, but my OS (XP x64) is not supported. I will be anxious to find out how much Vista actually depends on the GPU. Apple is frequently chided for selling their most expensive G5 by default with a 6600, given that the card noticeably slows the UI down compared to a 7800-series GPU. I can only hope that Vista doesn't follow the same trend, because I'd rather not replace an otherwise faultless video card just to have lag-free application switching.

Will there be an option for 2D desktop?? I'm assuming yes, cause its a bad move to go 3D only.
